More Sustainability Thanks To Insect Protein

More sustainability thanks to insect protein

As you know, we have always been committed to the proper feeding of pets. Also, the issue of sustainability is very important to us. To fulfil our responsibility as a company, we source the majority of our raw materials from suppliers in the region. This helps to avoid long transport routes and the associated environmental pollution.

With our pet food with insect protein, we are pursuing the goal of achieving even greater sustainability. This innovative protein supplier can make a decisive contribution to reducing the environmental damage associated with factory farming.

The ecological footprint of pets

In Germany alone, there are now almost 15 million cats and almost ten million dogs. Of course, each of these four-legged creatures needs food every day, which, due to the natural nutritional needs of dogs and cats, must consist largely of animal ingredients.

This inevitably means that dogs and cats, just like humans, have a fairly large ecological footprint. Considering that there are around 25 million four-legged friends in Germany alone, the associated burden on the climate and environment should not be underestimated.

Enormous environmental damage from factory farming

In 2018, almost 27 million pigs, about 12 million cattle, and over 170 million chickens and other poultry were kept in Germany.

Modern factory farming can meet the ever-increasing demand for cheap meat products. At the same time, however, livestock farming also causes enormous damage to the environment.

After all, around 75 percent of all agricultural land worldwide is already used for keeping livestock or for growing animal feed. In South America in particular, huge areas of forest are being cleared for this purpose every year. The proportion of agricultural land required for livestock is therefore likely to increase even further in the future.

Apart from this, huge quantities of water are used in meat production. For example, it takes around 5,000 litres of water to produce one kilogram of chicken meat. In the case of beef, water consumption is as high as 15,000 litres per kilo.

Farm animals accelerate climate change

Modern intensive livestock farming harms the environment, not only through its enormous need for water and space. Livestock farming is also responsible for a significant proportion of man-made climate change.

80 percent of all nitrous oxide emissions and 60 percent of all methane emissions are caused by agriculture. Livestock farming is responsible for the largest share of these emissions.

Nitrous oxide is considered to be 300 times more harmful to the climate and methane 25 times more harmful to the climate than CO2. The rising standard of living in large emerging countries and the growth of the world population lead us to expect that the demand for meat and the corresponding generation of greenhouse gases will probably increase even further in the future.

Insects are a sustainable alternative

In order to reduce the burden on the environment and slow down climate change, suitable alternatives for human food and dog and cat food are crucial.

Since both dogs and cats are known to rely on animal protein, a vegan diet is, obviously, not an option for them.

Our food with insect protein from the larvae of the black soldier fly, on the other hand, is the perfect raw material for species-appropriate pet food. At the same time, the use of insect protein makes it possible to avoid the numerous disadvantages associated with the normal production of meat.

Compared to normal meat, our insect protein has the following advantages:

  • The larvae require considerably less space.
  • The production of insect protein is characterised by much lower water consumption.
  • No additional feed is required to feed our larvae.
  • When digesting their food, our insects do not produce methane.
  • Production residues can easily be returned to the cycle as a natural fertiliser.

Sustainable and environmentally friendly feeding

Our cat and dog food with insect protein is the perfect choice for all pet owners who care about the environment, and at the same time do not want to compromise on the quality of the food for their beloved four-legged friend. Our insect protein allows for a protein supply that meets the needs of your dog and cat, so there are no disadvantages for dogs and cats if they have to change over permanently.
