Why a low-purine diet can be necessary
The degradation of purine produces uric acid, which is normally excreted in the urine without any problems. However, genetic defects and certain drugs can prevent the breakdown of purine and lead to the formation of kidney and bladder stones.
A corresponding genetic defect is known in dalmatians, for example, and a drug with the aforementioned consequences is allopurinol, which is used for the treatment of leishmaniasis. In both cases, a low-purine diet is recommended.
