Nebelung: Cat Food and a Description of the Breed
The Nebelung cat is a semi-longhair cat from the USA. It owes its name to its blue-grey coat and its progenitors, named after the main characters of the Song of the Nibelungs.
History of the Nebelung
The cat originally comes from the USA, where it was bred in the 1980s. It is a cross between the Russian Blue and an unknown cat breed with a long coat.
The Nebelung cat owes its name to its blue-grey coat, whose colour is supposed to remind of fog, and to the fact that its progenitors were called Siegfried and Brunhilde.
In the USA the Nebelung cat has been recognized by TICA as an independent cat breed since 1997. A recognition by the FiFé is still pending.
Appearance of the Nebelung
The breed is small to medium sized. Females reach a weight of three to four kilos and males weigh about four to six kilos.
The body of the catis slender and graceful. It has long legs and a long, straight neck. The cat’s head is wedge-shaped and its large ears are slightly pointed. The big eyes of the cat are yellowish green to green.
The coat
The Nebelung has a dense, semi-long coat. According to the breed standard it can only be blue.
The coat of the cat is slightly longer on the tail than on the rest of the body. Patterning is generally not desired. Therefore only solid coloured animals correspond to the breed standard.
Character of the Nebelung
Despite its almost mystical appearance, the Nebelung cat is a completely normal house cat. The cat is friendly and enjoys getting attention from its owner. They also love cuddling and playing.
The cat prefers a quiet environment where it can rely on fixed routines. They usually feel a particular connection with one person and are very well suited for a single person.
The cat is also suitable for families with children but the children need to show some consideration for the cat.
Looking after the Nebelung
The Nebelung is an undemanding cat. As long as the cat gets enough attention, they are happy.
But owners should keep in mind that the cats can jump and open doors very well. In order to prevent the cat from escaping the house, it’s important to lock the door.
The coat of the cat should be brushed regularly to prevent it from matting.
Diseases
The gene pool of the cat is very small. This leads to the fact that inbreeding is a widespread problem. Inbreeding leads to a weakened immune system.
If you decide to buy a Nebelung cat, you should therefore make sure to buy your four-legged friend from a good breeder.
Parasites such as cat fleas and grass mites are a common problem, especially in outdoor cats.
Owners of a Nebelung cat occasionally report that their cat friend suffers remarkably often from digestive problems such as diarrhoea and vomiting. A balanced diet as well as avoiding stress is very important.
The life expectancy of the Nebelung cat
A cat can reach an age of 12 years.
The owners should look after their cat with regular visits to the vet and by making sure the cat has all the necessary vaccinations.
