Devon Rex: Cat Food and a Description of the Breed
The Devon Rex is a relatively rare short haired cat with a slender build. It differs from other cat breeds because of its characteristic head shape and its large ears and eyes.
History of the Devon Rex
The Devon Rex originally comes from England. There in 1960 in the county of Devonshire a tomcat with curled hair was born. The owner Beryl Cox gave him the name Kirlee and began in the following years with the purposeful breeding.
In the beginning Burmese cats and British Shorthair were crossed repeatedly and over time it was possible to build up a purebred breeding. In Great Britain the Devon Rex has been recognized as an independent breed since 1967. The recognition by the US CFA followed in 1979.
Appearance of the Devon Rex
The Devon Rex is a medium sized cat. Males reach a weight of up to 4.5 kilograms, while females of the breed weigh only 2.5 to 4 kilograms. The body of the Devon Rex is remarkably slim and elegant. Nevertheless, it is equipped with a surprisingly strong musculature.
In addition to her graceful physique, which is further emphasized by her long and slender legs, the Devon Rex stands out directly, not least because of her unusual head shape. It has a broad and short head with pronounced cheekbones. In combination with her strikingly large ears and eyes, this makes the Devon Rex look a bit like a goblin.
The coat of the Devon Rex
Another characteristic feature of the Devon Rex is the short, very thin coat, which can be either wavy or curly. The extremely thin coat is caused by a genetic defect that affects creatine production and thus the structure of the hair. This sometimes leads to the fact that the tactile hairs are also curled or even completely missing.
Despite the extremely thin coat the coat of the Devon Rex should not show any bald spots. Regarding the coat colouring the breed standard does not provide any restrictions. Accordingly, all colours can occur in the Devon Rex.

Character of the Devon Rex
The Devon Rex has a temperamental and friendly character. They are extremely active and curious and love to explore their surroundings.
This intelligent cat proves to be very affectionate and faithful to its owner. Living together with other pets and children usually works very well.
Keeping and care of the Devon Rex
The Devon Rex is not a typical outdoor enthusiast. Even if she appreciates the one or other excursion in the summer months, she feels very comfortable in a warm apartment.
However, prospective cat owners should consider before buying that the Devon Rex does not like to be alone. Besides sufficient human attention, the company of another cat is therefore highly recommended.
The thin coat of the Devon Rex is quite easy to groom and it should be brushed several times a week. Due to its nature it is important to use a soft brush and to be careful.
Devon Rex diseases
The Devon Rex is generally regarded as quite a healthy breed. An above-average risk for typical diseases is not known. In kittens spastic paralysis may occasionally occur but these are isolated cases.
Slim cats tend to have inflammations of the gums and the roots of the teeth. A conscientious dental care is therefore especially important for the well-being of the Devon Rex.
Apart from that, the Devon Rex can of course also suffer from common cat diseases, such as cat sniffles or develop chronic kidney failure with increasing age.
The life expectancy of the Devon Rex
With regard to the life expectancy of the Devon Rex, reliable information is difficult to obtain. In principle, however, the breed can easily reach an age of 12 to 15 years under good living conditions. However, animals affected by inbreeding usually die much earlier.
The right food for the Devon Rex
The Devon Rex needs a well tolerated cat food, which provides it with all the necessary nutrients in the right amount. Due to its thin coat, which gives it little protection against the cold, its energy requirements may be slightly higher in relation to its weight.
It is important to take this into account when calculating the amount of food your cat should be fed.
In addition, Devon Rex can sometimes have intolerances and food allergies. We therefore recommend that you use our hypoallergenic cat food. This is available both as dry and wet food for cats.
The insect protein contained in the food is particularly easily digestible and provides your Devon Rex with easily digestible protein with a high biological value, so that a needs-based supply is no problem even for nutritionally sensitive and allergic animals.
In addition to our insect-based cat food, the following products can be useful for your Devon Rex:
- Dental Powder cleans the teeth of your cat gently and reliably.
- Shiimun Skin supports the skin and coat health of your Devon Rex.
- Kidney Power Powder promotes the natural detoxification function of the kidneys.
