Singapore: Nutrition and a Description of the Breed
The Singapura is a very small cat breed from the USA. In Europe it is still quite rare. Cat lovers appreciate Singapura for its attractive appearance and its friendly character.
History of the Singapura
Today, the exact origin of Singapura cannot be clearly reconstructed. Partly, it is reported that it descends from very small cats that lived in the drainpipes of Singapore.
It’s considered much more likely that the Singapura is a purpose-bred cat breed and that it originated in the USA in the 1970s from crosses between the Abyssinian and the Burmese cat.
The first specimens of the breed did not reach Europe until the late 1980s.
Appearance of the Singapura
The Singapura is one of the smallest race-cats at all. Males reach a weight of 2.5 to 3 kilos and female Singaporeans usually only weigh about two kilos. Nevertheless, the slender cat has a muscular physique. Her short, strong legs give the Singapura a remarkable jumping power.
The ears of the Singapura are large and broad. Her large eyes are almond shaped and are characterized by her expressive look. According to the breed standard they may be either green, yellow or hazel.
The coat of the Singapura
The short coat of the Singapura is dense and smooth. It lies close to the body and has a silky sheen. While other cats are partly bred in numerous colours, the coat of the Singapura may only be in the colour Sepia Agouti. This is an ivory coat colour with a brown ticking. The belly of the Singapura is slightly lighter than the rest of the body.
Character of the Singapura
The Singapura distinguishes itself by a friendly character. She is very people-oriented and prefers to spend as much time as possible close to her owner. She appreciates cuddling together as well as playing with a cat rod and other exciting cat toys.
The Singapura is very sociable. She is therefore not only happy to have human companions, but also to have a conspecific with whom she can play and romp around. When dealing with children, the Singapura normally proves to be patient and friendly. However, care should be taken that they do not put unnecessary pressure on the four-legged friend.
Keeping and care of the Singapura
The Singapura is specially suitable for the keeping as a pure residential cat. Occasional excursions into a cat-safe garden or some fresh air on a secured balcony are certainly appreciated. But this is not decisive for her well-being.
What is much more important for the Singapura is the connection to her family that the petite cat enjoys to the full. Only when strangers come to visit, it is possible that she shows her distant side and withdraws.
The coat of the Singapura is short and has no undercoat. Therefore she loses only a few hairs, so that occasional brushing is quite sufficient to support her own coat care and primarily serves to strengthen the bond between human and cat.
Singapura Diseases
The Singapura is a robust and healthy breed cat. However, the rather small gene pool of the breed can sometimes prove to be a problem. Because it leads to the fact that inbreeding is not rare in the Singapura. Animals affected by inbreeding suffer from a weak immune system and a resulting increased susceptibility to disease.
Furthermore, it is possible that too small Singaporeans may have to deal with certain health problems. However, this is not to be expected with normally sized specimens, whose size and weight are within the intended limits.
Regular visits to the vet, vaccinations and regular deworming help to prevent and detect different cat diseases.
Life expectancy of the Singapura
A Singapura can easily reach an age of 15 years and more. As with all cats, factors such as inbreeding and poor nutrition can significantly shorten the life expectancy of a cat.
The right food for the Singapura
With a balanced feeding you make a decisive contribution to a demand-oriented supply of your Singapura. It is therefore essential that you make sure that you provide your cat with the right amount of food.
Also give preference to a high-quality cat food with a sufficient content of animal protein sources. After all, your Singapura is a carnivore. Cereals and other unsuitable ingredients can easily cause health problems such as food intolerance.
