Why we do not offer hydrolysed dog food
More and more dogs suffer from food allergies and intolerances. In affected animals these cause problems with the skin and digestion.
As the owner, you should never ignore your dog's complaints and counteract them as soon as possible by changing his diet accordingly.
In the following, we will explain why choosing a hydrolysed dog food is not always the right decision and which alternatives are more suitable.
How does food allergy occur in dogs?
In most cases, certain animal proteins are responsible for food allergies in dogs. Dairy products and beef regularly cause problems. However, wheat is also known to cause intolerances as an ingredient in dog food.
To counteract an existing food allergy, it is therefore important to switch to a more easily digestible protein source and to consistently avoid contact with the allergen.
For this purpose, dog owners have the choice between food with less frequently used protein sources, such as lamb and horse, and hydrolysed dog food.
How is hydrolysed dog food produced?
Hydrolysed dog food is food with proteins whose molecules have been additionally split during production. This makes it impossible for the organism of the allergic dog to identify the proteins in the food as possible allergens.
Accordingly, feeding hydrolysed dog food should prevent allergic reactions from occurring.
Exactly which protein supplier is used for this purpose is usually irrelevant. Thanks to hydrolysis, a dog that normally cannot tolerate beef can eat, for example, dog food containing hydrolysed beef protein without any problems.
Why we are critical of hydrolysed dog food
In theory, the change to a hydrolysed dog food may seem quite reasonable. In reality, however, there are some disadvantages, which is why the use of the supposed miracle product for dogs with feed allergies should be viewed critically.
First of all, the splitting of the proteins during production ensures that the organism of the four-legged friend takes on part of the work for which certain enzymes are normally responsible for in digestion.
Apart from this, hydrolysis usually destroys microparticles contained in the protein. Besides, hydrolysed proteins have a very bitter taste, so that a hydrolysed dog food without artificial flavours would be inedible.
Furthermore, the use of inferior protein sources, such as soya, and high carbohydrate content in hydrolysed dog food is often the rule.
Hydrolysed dog food does not counteract the actual cause
The fundamental problem with hydrolysed dog food is that the actual causes of food allergy are completely ignored. Instead, one tries to trick the dog's organism with often inferior protein and thus avoid allergic reactions.
In part, this may well work. However, the use of hydrolysed dog food does not allow for a species-appropriate diet that guarantees an optimal supply for the allergic dog.
