Koi Food: This Is How You Feed Your Nishikigoi Properly
Healthy koi carp essentially need two things. These sensitive fish need high water quality and high quality koi food.
This is the only way to ensure healthy growth and a strong immune system, which of course also results in better health and a particularly strong coloring of the attractive fish.
Koi carp are omnivores
The koi carp is an omnivore. Omnivores eat both plant and animal food.
In the wild, omnivore fish mainly eat algae and aquatic plants as well as small crabs, worms and insects. The latter serve the koi primarily as a source of proteins and fats that its body needs.
With regard to koi feed, this means that the fish should be given a mixture of plant and animal food. In this way, a balanced ratio of fats, proteins and raw fibers important for the intestinal activity can be guaranteed.
Use only suitable koi food
Of course, the fact that your koi carp are omnivores does not mean that you can give them everything to eat. For example, things like peas, beans, grain or rice have lost nothing on the menu of demanding fish, just like bird food or white bread.
Because koi are unable to digest the hard shell of legumes and grains, and white bread can sometimes contain small amounts of bleach.
Even if you mean it well, such foods are the safest way to do serious damage to the health of your Nishikigoi. Therefore, only use the right koi food in good quality and refrain from experimenting with your koi.
Give the right amount of koi food
Koi carp do not feel full. This means that the fish generally eat as much koi food as they can. In addition, remnants of the koi feed remain in the water and lead to contamination there.
It is therefore important for two reasons that you adapt the amount of food that you provide to your koi to actual needs and not simply portion the fish's meals according to their feelings.
Otherwise, you risk the health of your Nishikigoi due to excessive amounts of koi food and sooner or later you have to reckon with diseases and parasites, for example.
The koi food and the season
Koi carp are cold-blooded animals. You cannot regulate your body temperature independently. Instead, it depends on the temperature of its surroundings. This fact affects, among other things, the digestion of the animals.
The colder it gets, the slower their digestion will go, and the higher the water temperature, the more active the fish will be and the faster their digestion will go.
You must also take this into account when feeding. On the one hand, you should therefore reduce the amount of koi feed at cold temperatures. In this way you avoid unnecessarily contaminating the water.
In addition, in the colder months of spring and autumn, you should choose a particularly easily digestible koi food. This ensures that the digestion of your koi is not overloaded and the fish are still optimally supplied with all the necessary nutrients.
Koi food is not necessary in winter
Koi carp usually hibernate in winter. Since they slow down your metabolism considerably, you can generally do without koi feed at water temperatures below eight degrees.
However, on particularly mild and sunny days, the fish can occasionally become active even in winter. If so, you can provide your Nishikigoi with some koi food.
This helps the animals to fill up their energy stores a little and to get through the winter more easily. However, make sure to limit yourself to small amounts and also use a particularly easily digestible koi food for occasional feeding during the cold season.
