Why We Make Dog and Cat Food with Insect Protein
In addition to classic varieties that contain chicken or salmon, animal owners can also find products with insect protein in our range of dog and cat food.
In this article we will explain why we chose this unusual protein source and what advantages it brings for your four-legged friend.
Insect protein is good for the environment
Modern factory farming is associated with extremely questionable conditions for animals and represents a significant burden on the environment.
Around 75 percent of all agricultural land is already used either directly or indirectly for keeping farm animals such as cattle, pigs or chickens. In addition, there is enormous water and energy consumption and (at least for cows) an immense emission of the climate-damaging greenhouse gas methane.
In view of the increasing global demand for meat, these problems are likely to increase significantly in the future. It is therefore high time to look into alternatives and not to forget the diet of dogs and cats. Pet food with insect protein can make a valuable contribution to greater sustainability.
Our insect-based dog and cat food has the following environmental benefits:
- The space requirement of the insects is very small.
- The need for additional cultivation of feed is eliminated.
- No environmentally harmful methane is produced during breeding.
- Only a fraction of the energy and water required to produce insect protein.
- Production residues are returned to the cycle as natural fertilizers.
Insects are a full meat substitute
No matter how important the topic of environmental protection may be to you, the purchase of feed should probably be primarily about providing your four-legged friend with needs.
Sustainable production is of no use if your pet ends up suffering from it and, for example, your cat is struggling with deficiency symptoms due to an unsuitable composition of its feed.
With our insect-based feed, however, such fears are unfounded. Because insect protein is characterized by a complex amino acid profile. It is very digestible and contains all essential amino acids, so that an optimal supply of proteins is guaranteed at all times.
Compared to classic meat, there are no disadvantages in this regard and your four-legged friend can enjoy his new food without risk.
Insect protein is hypoallergenic
Feed allergies are a widespread problem that has affected not only many dogs, but also more and more cats in recent years.
They are mostly triggered by animal proteins in the feed and are particularly noticeable in the form of digestive problems and problems with the skin and fur.
In order to alleviate the symptoms, a consistent change of feed is necessary. Insect protein proves to be the ideal alternative to hydrolyzed proteins, which are often of more than dubious quality.
If you find that your cat does not tolerate their food, we recommend that you choose our hypoallergenic cat food with insect protein. You will be amazed at how quickly the symptoms disappear and how quickly your cat’s wellbeing improves.
Not all insects are the same
Since we were one of the first manufacturers in Europe to launch dog food with insect protein in 2016, numerous products with this unusual source of protein have been added.
In the meantime, insect-based pet food has become a real trend that more and more manufacturers are jumping on. The product quality isn’t always high though. One of the reasons for this is that various insects can be used as raw materials.
While most manufacturers rely on mealworms, we only use the larvae of the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) for our cat food with insects.
This has the following advantages in particular:
- Unlike mealworms, the halls for Hermetia illucens do not have to be heated.
- The larvae can only be fed with vegetable waste, so there is no need for additional feed.
- The larvae can be processed into insect protein much faster (after about six days).
Insect breeding without antibiotics
Using insect protein in cat food has another great advantage: the larvae of the black soldier fly don't get sick. In contrast to conventional farm animals, no antibiotics are used in their breeding. This means that antibiotics won’t be transmitted into the food.
Insects as the only source of protein
In contrast to many competitors, we exclusively use insects as the animal protein source for our insect-based pet food and do not add inferior ingredients such as dried chicken protein.
This would reduce production costs and lead to a small number of dogs and cats accepting the food more readily. However, it is the only way we can guarantee that our pet food is really hypoallergenic and sustainable and that your four-legged friend can benefit from the many advantages of our insect larvae.
Conclusion: appropriate and digestible cat nutrition thanks to insect protein
As you can see, there is some reason to switch to insect protein in your cat's diet. Just like dogs benefit from Bellfor's insect-based products, cat food with insects from I love my cat offers numerous advantages.
The food is easily digestible, contains all essential amino acids and is also ideal for food-sensitive or allergic cats. In addition, by switching to our cat food with insect protein, you are also making a valuable contribution to environmental protection.
Even if you may be skeptical at first, it is worth giving the innovative protein supplier a chance and trying out the digestible food on your cat. We are sure that your room tiger will not only taste the difference, but also feel it.
