Identify and Effectively Treat Common Parasites in Cats
Parasites can have serious consequences. In this article we will explain which parasites can cause problems in cats and what symptoms they cause. We will also explain how to treat a parasite infestation and how to avoid it in the future.
Which parasites can infect cats?
Basically cat parasites can be divided into endo- and ectoparasites. Endoparasites are the pests that nest inside the body, while ectoparasites only infest their host externally.
The parasites that can affect your cat include
- Ticks
- Mites
- Fleas
- Worms
- Giardia
Ticks in cats
Ticks are so-called ectoparasites. They represent an order within the mites and occur practically worldwide. The small parasites bite into the skin of their host animals and feed on blood. Some species of ticks also infest cats, but of course it is mainly outdoor people who are at risk.
The actual sucking process of the tick is completely harmless for your cat. However, the parasites often carry pathogens which can enter the organism of the quadruped during its blood meal.
To protect your cat from infection, it is important to regularly check the coat of outdoor cats for ticks during the warmer months of the year and to remove any parasites that may be present immediately. In addition, it can be useful to use a natural tick repellent for cats.
Mites in cats
Your cat can be attacked by various other mite species. These include grass mites, mange mites and ear mites. The symptoms that these parasites cause in your cat vary greatly.
In addition to severe itching, they can cause skin problems such as rashes, inflammation or dandruff. Ear mite infestation can also cause an ear infection in your cat.
While grass mites are relatively harmless to cats in most cases, predators, especially mange mites, pose a very serious health risk. In the worst case, the parasites can even cause life-threatening blood poisoning in your cat.
Fleas in cats
Fleas are very widespread. They also multiply very quickly and can only be eliminated with great effort.
Among the possible symptoms of infestation with cat fleas are skin inflammation and itching. Affected cats often also suffer from hair loss. If your quadruped develops an allergy to flea saliva, the symptoms are particularly severe.
Fleas can infest your cat with diseases and parasites. It’s therefore important that you treat cat fleas as promptly and consistently as possible. This also includes comprehensive hygiene measures in your home, as larvae and eggs of the fleas can be found in many places.
Worms in cats
Worms are also among the parasites that cats are very often affected by. Most types of worms are intestinal parasites. However, some also affect other organs, such as the lungs or heart.
Typical symptoms that worms cause in cats include vomiting and diarrhoea, loss of appetite, weight loss, a dull coat, and deficiency symptoms due to inadequate nutrition.
If you suspect that your cat is infested with worms, you should deworm your four-legged friend as soon as possible. When buying a worming treatment, however, make sure that you give preference to a product that is as easy to digest as possible.
Giardia in cats
Giardia are microscopic parasites that can infect your cat or any other host animal such as a dog. Similar to many worms, they settle in the intestine where they feed on nutrients from the animal's food.
The symptoms that Giardia causes in cats are similar to those of worm infestation. Often the diarrhoea of the cat is additionally bloody. In addition, infection with the annoying parasites can also cause fever.
Cats with Giardia primarily need a low carbohydrate diet and a suitable worming diet. In addition, hygiene measures in the household are very important, because otherwise your quadruped can get infected with them again and again.
Natural help against intestinal parasites in cats
Conventional worming treatments administered to cats with worms or giardia usually contain active ingredients that can also harm the body of your four-legged friend. For this reason we recommend I love my cat Vermal for the treatment of cats with intestinal parasites.
This is a completely natural preparation with which you can reliably fight Giardia and worms. At the same time, the organism of your cat, which is already weakened by the parasites, is not unnecessarily burdened.
