Coccidiosis in Cats: Recognizing Symptoms and Treating Them Effectively
Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease that can infect cats. The parasite infestation causes digestive problems and can be a considerable danger, especially for weakened animals.
What are coccidia?
Infection with coccidiosis occurs as a so-called smear infection, when the cat comes into contact with coccidia through contaminated surfaces or infected faeces of conspecifics.
Coccidia are unicellular parasites that settle in the intestinal mucosa of their host after oral absorption. There they begin to multiply, so that after a few days the cat itself excretes spores of the coccidia.
As a result, the parasites spread very easily and more cats may develop coccidiosis.
Symptoms of coccidiosis in cats
A disease of coccidiosis in cats manifests itself primarily through diarrhoea. How pronounced this is, depends mainly on the general condition of the quadruped.
In healthy adult cats the diarrhoea is usually limited and no further symptoms occur. However, especially kittens or weakened cats often have a hard time with coccidiosis.
In these cases the coccidia can sometimes even lead to death. The diarrhoea is often bloody in these cats. In addition, there are attacks of ravenous appetite or even loss of appetite.
In spite of sufficient food intake, cats with severe coccidiosis become increasingly thin and the severe diarrhoea leads to dehydration. In some cases cats can also get fever.
Diagnosis of coccidiosis in cats
In order to diagnose coccidiosis in cats reliably, the veterinarian must examine a faecal sample. However, spores are not always present in the faeces. For this reason, it is necessary to collect faeces samples over several days so that the veterinarian can examine them and reliably detect coccidial infection.
Since giardia causes quite similar symptoms in cats, it is useful to examine the quadruped not only for coccidia, but also for possible giardia.
Treatment of a cat with coccidiosis
Various drugs are available for the treatment of cats with coccidiosis. However, these represent an enormous burden for the four-legged friend and cause sometimes quite massive side effects.
We recommend that you use more tolerable alternatives when fighting coccidiosis. It is best to use I love my cat Vermal. This is our natural remedy against intestinal parasites in cats.
The preparation uses selected herbs to create an intestinal environment in which the coccidia can no longer multiply, so that your cat will soon be able to survive the annoying parasite infestation.
I Love My Cat Vermal contains no chemical active ingredients and the treatment is easy to digest and does not put additional strain on your cat’s weakened immune system and body.
Support for the cat's immune system
Infestation with coccidia weakens the immune system of your cat. In order to support the recovery of your four-legged friend, we therefore recommend the administration of a suitable food supplement to strengthen the immune system.
The best way to do this is to use I love my cat Immun. The natural preparation is available for adult cats or kittens and strengthens the immune system of your weakened quadruped with high-quality nutrients.
Coccidiosis in cats and hygiene
In order to get rid of coccidia permanently, it is not enough to concentrate your measures exclusively on the parasites in the intestines of your four-legged friend.
In addition, comprehensive hygiene measures in the household are necessary to remove the spores of the coccidia and prevent your cat from becoming infected again.
As the parasites die at temperatures above 55 degrees, it is recommended that all surfaces are thoroughly cleaned with a steam cleaner. Additionally, textiles your cat has been in contact with should be washed at 60 degrees. This procedure requires a little effort. However, it will help you to permanently eliminate coccidiosis in your cat.
Are cats with coccidiosis contagious to humans?
There are different types of coccidia. However, these are always specialised for a particular host. If your cat suffers from coccidiosis, you don't need to worry that you will be infected by your four-legged friend.
The situation is different for other cats that may live with you in your household. It's best to treat them at the same time, even if only one cat has shown symptoms of coccidiosis so far.
