Toyger: Cat food and breed portrait
The Toyger is a relatively young cat breed from the USA. Their appearance should remind of a tiger. Its name is composed of the English word toy for toy and the second syllable of tiger.
History of the Toyger
The Toyger is originally from the USA. In the late 1980's they began with targeted breeding. The aim at that time was to breed a cat breed with the appearance of a small tiger.
To achieve this goal, the American breeder Judy Sugden crossed an American Shorthair with a Bengal cat. In the early 1990s she also crossed an Indian street cat.
In 1993 the Toyger was entered into the stud book by TICA. However, it took until 2007 before it was fully recognised as an independent cat breed, although the FiFé does not yet recognise the Toyger.
Appearance of the Toyger
The Toyger belongs to the designer cats. It is medium sized and has an elongated, muscular body with a strong bone structure. Female animals reach a weight of about 2.5 to 5 kilos, while males usually become heavier at four to six kilos.
The hind legs of Toygers are slightly longer than the front legs. Their large paws are round and have black pads.
The Toyger has a broad, wedge-shaped head with rounded contours. Their ears are rather small. They stand wide apart and their tips are rounded. The almond-shaped eyes of the Toyger are either yellow or green.
The coat of the Toyger
The fur of the Toyger is short and very thick. It has a soft structure and is especially characterized by its characteristic pattern. On an orange to reddish ground tone there are clearly set off black or dark brown stripes. The belly and the inner sides of the thighs should ideally be white.
Character of the Toyger
Despite its predator-like appearance, the Toyger is characterized by a decidedly gentle and friendly character. She is very cuddly and playful. This intelligent cat builds up a close relationship with her owner.
The Toyger gets along just as well with conspecifics as with children living in the household. As long as the sociable cat does not feel neglected, it proves to be an uncomplicated and loving roommate.
Keeping and care of the Toyger
The Toyger is a classic residential cat. Although it does appreciate some exercise in a cat-safe garden, it does not necessarily need to be outdoors to live a happy and contented life.
However, it is important to pay enough attention to the Toyger and to actively involve it in what is going on. Apart from extensive stroking, common games, which challenge the quadruped both mentally and physically, may not be missing.
The fur of the Toyger is easy-care. It is therefore quite sufficient to invest some time occasionally in brushing the coat. In this way, loose hair can be removed and any skin problems can be detected early. The grooming ritual also strengthens the bond between the Toyger and its owner.
Toyger diseases
Due to its still young history, it is difficult to assess to what extent the Toyger is affected by certain hereditary diseases. In general, she is currently considered robust and healthy.
However, the excessive focus on the external appearance is proving to be a disadvantage in terms of health in many cats. It therefore remains to be seen whether genetic diseases will continue to be absent from the Toyger in the future.
Regardless of this, cat owners should of course generally pay attention to the health of their four-legged friend. Because common cat diseases such as cat cold and parasites, such as cat fleas, can of course also occur in the Toyger.
Regular visits to the vet and preventive measures such as important vaccinations and prophylactic deworming with a natural worming agent for cats can help to avoid health problems or at least to detect them promptly.
The life expectancy of the Toyger
The life expectancy of the Toyger is about 12 to 15 years. However, how old the cat becomes depends on various factors. Especially a poor diet and the risks associated with possible freedom can drastically reduce the life expectancy of the Toyger.
The right food for the Toyger
All in all, the Toyger proves to be uncomplicated in terms of its nutrition. Like all cats, it is of course a carnivore, which must also be considered in the composition of its food.
Therefore, avoid cat food containing cereals and instead rely on high-quality products with a high proportion of animal protein, such as the range offered by I love my cat.
Our natural wet and dry food for cats is characterised by a carefully balanced composition that optimally meets the nutritional needs of your four-legged friend. In this way we can guarantee not only an excellent taste but also an excellent digestibility of the food.
