Which cats do not shed?
Cat hair on furniture and clothing is undoubtedly one of the less positive side effects of cat ownership. Many people therefore want cats that do not shed in the hope this will keep the cleaning effort in their own home as low as possible.
In the following, we will introduce you to some cat breeds that do not shed, or only shed a little. You will also learn how the amount of shed hair affects a cat's allergy potential and why you should not ignore excessive fur loss.
Are there cats that do not shed?
Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a cat that does not shed at all. All cats lose a certain amount of hair every day. These are normally replaced by new hairs, so that the coat of the four-legged friend does not change visually.
In a cat household, it is therefore impossible to completely avoid shedding hair on furniture or clothing. An exception to this rule is the so-called “naked cat”, known as the Peterbald.
These animals have only a very thin, barely visible down. Accordingly, the cats do not shed, or they shed so little that it is practically irrelevant in terms of cleaning effort. However, not every cat lover appreciates the unusual appearance of a naked cat.
Cats in their coat changing season shed particularly heavily
The change of coat takes place twice a year and serves to adapt to the changes in the ambient temperatures in summer and winter. Cats undergoing a coat change lose a lot of hair. However, it is usually more pronounced in outdoor cats than in indoor cats. The latter tend to shed more or less all year round.
Regardless of this, cat owners should be prepared for the fact that the cleaning effort increases during the change of coat. Regular brushing can help to counteract this, as loose hairs can be removed directly from the cat's coat in this way. Brushing also promotes blood circulation to the skin and the growth of the new coat for summer and winter.
Cats that do not shed much
Although there are no cats that do not shed at all, breed does play a role in the amount of shedding. While the Siberian cat and the Maine Coon, for example, lose a lot of hair, other cats shed much less.
Cats that shed little hair include, for example, the following breeds:
Are low shedding cats suitable for allergy sufferers?
When looking for cats that do not shed or shed little, not all people are concerned about the cleaning effort associated with the loss of fur. Often the problem is actually a cat allergy.
This is because it is often mistakenly assumed that the allergic reactions are triggered by the four-legged friends' shedding hair. In fact, however, certain protein compounds found in a cat’s saliva and dander, among other things, are responsible.
Whether cats shed a lot or a little hair is therefore not very important with regard to cat allergies. Even naked cats can cause problems for allergy sufferers. Instead, it is the amount of allergens that the animal distributes in their environment that determines the degree to which discomfort is caused.
Causes of excessive hair loss in cats
If your cat is shedding noticeably outside of the shedding season and its coat is thinning over time, this is a sign of health problems.
Hair loss in cats can have various causes. These include nutritional deficiencies or an untreated infestation with skin parasites such as cat fleas.
A visit to the vet is usually advisable in the case of excessive fur loss, in order to clarify the causes and to treat it promptly and professionally.
