Cornish Rex: Cat Food and a Description of the Breed
The Cornish Rex originates from Cornwall. Its most striking feature is its curled coat, which is caused by a special mutation. Cat lovers appreciate the Cornish Rex among other things because of its affection and its extremely friendly nature.
History of the Cornish Rex
The Cornish Rex originated in Cornwall in the 1950s, when a cat with a curly coat was discovered by chance among a litter of ordinary farm cats. This cat was used for breeding other cats with curly coats.
His offspring were crossed with British Shorthair, Oriental Shorthair, Siamese and Burmese to further develop the breed. It didn't take long until the new cat breed could prevail. Already in 1954 the first specimens of the Cornish Rex arrived in the USA. The recognition by the FiFé took place in 1968.
Appearance of the Cornish Rex
The Cornish Rex is a small to medium sized cat with a slender body and long legs. Females weigh about two to four kilos and males can reach a weight of up to 4.5 kilos.
The head of the Cornish Rex is wedge-shaped. It has a long nose and large, high set ears, which remind a little bit of a bat. Her medium sized eyes are oval. There are no restrictions concerning the eye colour.
Altogether the appearance of the Cornish Rex is very similar to the Oriental Shorthair.
The coat of the Cornish Rex
The cat’s wavy or curly coat is its most characteristic external feature. It resembles the coat of a mole and is therefore sometimes called mole fur.
The coat of the Cornish Rex has a plush texture.
The breed standard of the Cornish Rex allows all colours. Among others there are single-coloured as well as two- or three-coloured animals and cats with a tabby pattern.
Charakter der Cornish Rex
Temperament and joy of movement are very distinctive with the Cornish Rex. She has an enormous jumping power and proves to be a very skilled climber.
The Cornish Rex is very intelligent and curious. They love playing with their human roommates and learning new tricks. They also enjoy cuddling and stroking.
The Cornish Rex builds up a close relationship with its owner and acts peacefully with other animals.
Keeping and care of the Cornish Rex
The Cornish Rex is ideal for home use. Outdoor use is possible in principle. Due to the nature of its coat, however, the Cornish Rex is comparatively sensitive to cold. Trips to a cat-safe garden should therefore be limited to days with good weather if possible.
As long as it receives sufficient attention and can participate in the events, the Cornish Rex is a frugal and uncomplicated roommate. It can be well educated and therefore fits into family life without any problems.
The thin coat of the Cornish Rex is easy to care for. It usually does not form any knots, so that occasional brushing is sufficient to remove loose hairs and any impurities. The brush used should have bristles that are as soft as possible.
Cornish Rex diseases
Due to the concentration on the coat texture, the gene pool of the Cornish Rex is quite small, so that inbreeding is unfortunately not uncommon with her. In addition, the cats often suffer from inflammation of the gums and the roots of the teeth. A conscientious dental care is therefore very important for the Cornish Rex.
In addition, she has comparatively often problems with her coat due to the Rex mutation. Affected cats then have hair loss, get bald spots and their hair breaks off more often. Sometimes a Cornish Rex with coat problems also lacks tactile hair.
Apart from that, the Cornish Rex can of course also suffer from various breed-independent cat diseases and get infected with cat sniffles, for example. Regular check-ups at the veterinarian, where among other things important vaccinations for cats are carried out, are therefore highly recommended.
The life expectancy of the Cornish Rex
The Cornish Rex grows on average about 12 to 15 years old. However, it is important to note that bad keeping conditions and inbreeding can reduce the life expectancy of the gentle cats with the curly coat, sometimes quite significantly.
