Cat Breeds: An Overview of the Most Famous Breeds
Numerous different cat breeds have been created through selective breeding. About 100 different cat breeds have been created since the middle of the 20th century. The Siamese and the Angora cat are considered to be one of the oldest cat breeds.
Domestic cats are the most popular pets
Cats are the most popular pets. The average weight of a typical domestic cat is around four kilos. Depending on the breed, however, quite high deviations are possible. While small cat breeds weigh just 2.5 kilograms, it is not unusual for large domestic cats to weigh a good ten kilos.
Different cat breeds have different needs
Even if they look much more similar in comparison to different dog breeds, there are sometimes quite clear differences between the different cat breeds.
This is true for the outward appearance as well as for the needs.
Common systematics of the cat breeds
Traditionally, a distinction is made between short-haired and long-haired cat breeds and animals with a semi-long coat. The group of shorthair cats consists of most breeds, while the group of longhair cats only includes the Persian cat and some colour variations of it.
Popular breeds of cats with short coat
Short-haired cat breeds are particularly widespread. In contrast to their conspecifics with a longer coat, the effort for coat care is limited.
Well-known short-haired cat breeds are for example:
- Abyssinian cat
- Egyptian Mau
- British Shorthair
- Burmese
- Chartreux
- European Shorthair
- Exotic Shorthair
- German Rex
- Russian Blue
- Siamese cat
Popular cat breeds with half-long coat
Semi-longhair cats represent the second larger group among the cat breeds. The grooming often requires a lot of time, which prospective cat owners should take into account.
Well known semi-longhair cats are for example:
- British Longhair
- German Longhair
- Sacred Burma
- Maine Coon
- Norwegian Forest Cat
- Oriental Longhair
- RagaMuffin
- Ragdoll
- Siberian cat
- Turkish Angora
Cat breeds with long fur
There are only shorthair and longhair cats but the term semi-longhair cats has become established. Today the group of longhair cats consists only of the Persian and some cat breeds, which are only colour variants of the Persian.
Hairless cat breeds
There are some cat breeds which have almost no coat. These so-called naked cats are assigned to the shorthair cats. They are usually not completely hairless. But their coat is so short that it is practically invisible.
Because naked cats often have only weakly developed whiskers, they are considered as torture breeding in Germany. Regardless of this, hairless cats are especially susceptible to sunburn due to the lack of fur, which must be taken into account when keeping them.
Well-known cat breeds without coat are for example
- Don Sphynx
- Peterbald
- Sphynx cat
Hybrid cats
Hybrid cats are becoming increasingly popular with cat owners. These cat breeds are crosses between wild cats and domestic cats. Among other things, they are characterized by an exceptionally high physical performance.
Homozygous bred hybrid cats can normally be kept as domestic cats without any problems and usually show themselves to be very affectionate towards their owners.
The best known cat breeds among the hybrids are the Bengal cat and the Savannah cat. Both breeds have their origin in the USA.
