Sphynx Cat: Cat Food and a Description of the Breed
The Sphynx cat is a hairless cat breed from Canada. The Sphynx cats tend to be highly intelligent and exceptionally loving and affectionate.
History of the Sphynx-Cat
The Sphynx cat originally comes from Canada, where it was bred with the help of naturally mutated cats without fur and developed into an independent breed. Only a few years after the birth of the first hairless animals the Sphynx cat was recognized as a new cat breed in Canada in 1971.
Appearance of the Sphynx cat
The Sphynx cat is medium sized and reaches a weight of 3.5 to 7 kilos. Its body is muscular and its legs are of medium length. Its head is equipped with a strong chin and pronounced cheeks. The large ears further emphasize the triangular appearance of her head. The lemon shaped eyes of the Sphynx cat are set obliquely.
However, the most characteristic external feature of the Sphynx cat is without doubt its almost complete hairlessness. On closer inspection only a slight fluff on the skin is visible.
Nevertheless the Sphynx cat may show different colours and patterns. Because her skin, which ideally should have wrinkles in the neck and between the ears, can be both light and dark. Beside solid coloured animals also Sphynx cats with a spotted body are no rarity.
Character of the Sphynx cat
The Sphynx cat is characterized by a very loving character. They tend to be very attached to one member of the family and show special affection for this person.
The Sphynx cat is quite sociable and it’s important to plan enough time for activities and cuddles.
The Sphynx cat is very intelligent and they need many cat toys. She usually gets along well with other animals in the household however living with children can sometimes be problematic.
Keeping and care of the Sphynx cat
The Sphynx cat is primarily suitable as a pure domestic cat. This is not so much because of its affectionate nature, but because of its missing fur.
This makes the Sphynx cat especially susceptible to sunburn in summer. At the same time it leads to an increased sensitivity to cold, so that the hairless cats quickly catch a cold when the temperatures in autumn and winter are accordingly low.
Occasional trips to the garden are alright. For the well-being of the four-legged friend, however, permanent outdoor activities over a longer period should be avoided.
Concerning coat care there is not much to say about the Sphynx cat for obvious reasons. As she has no hair, the usual coat change as well as the necessity to comb or brush the quadruped is omitted.
Sphynx cat diseases
An increased predisposition to certain cat diseases is not yet known in the Sphynx cat. However, the gene pool of the breed is rather small, so inbreeding is a common problem.
Affected animals suffer from an increased susceptibility to disease and also tend to develop allergies. If you decide to buy a Sphynx cat, you should therefore make sure to buy an animal from a serious breeder.
The life expectancy of the Sphynx cat
Concerning the life expectancy of the Sphynx cat there is hardly any reliable data. While there is occasional mention of animals between 18 and 20 years of age, inbreeding and health problems can sometimes lead to a significantly lower life expectancy of just eight or ten years.
The right food for the Sphynx cat
A balanced diet contributes significantly to a healthy and vital life of the Sphynx cat. Due to the lack of coat it must be taken into account that the energy requirement in relation to the weight is slightly higher and the amount of food the cat should be fed should be correspondingly larger.
Apart from that it is of course important that the food for the Sphynx cat has a high content of animal proteins and does not contain any unsuitable ingredients such as cereals.
This is of course the case with cat food from the I love my cat range. Both the wet and dry food is characterised by natural ingredients and a species-appropriate composition.
