German Rex: Cat Food and a Description of the Breed
The German Rex is a medium sized cat from Germany. It is characterized by its slender body and the characteristic wavy to curly coat. Because of its friendly and affectionate nature the German Rex is an excellent family cat.
History of the German Rex
The German Rex comes from Germany. One of the first German Rex cats is the tomcat Munk from Königsberg, which could be seen on photos taken in the early 1930s.
Like other Rex cats, it developed from a random gene mutation, which leads to the typical wavy to curly coat of the animals. As this trait is inherited recessively, it was not possible to breed the curly cats at first. As long as both parents do not carry the corresponding gene, the offspring always have a smooth coat.
Mating a cat with a curly coat with one of her offspring finally resulted in a litter with two curly and two smooth hairs. Thus the foundation for the targeted breeding of the German Rex was laid. Since 1982 the FiFé recognizes it as an independent cat breed.
Appearance of the German Rex
The German Rex is a medium sized cat with a wiry build. Females weigh three to four kilos and males reach a weight of four to five kilos. Their legs are quite slender and their paws are oval.
The German Rex has a round head. It has strong cheeks and a slight indentation at the base of the nose. Her ears have rounded tips and her medium sized eyes are round.
The coat of the German Rex
The coat is the most characteristic feature of the German Rex. It is wavy to curly and feels extremely soft. It can take up to two years after the birth of the German Rex until the curls have developed completely.
Compared to other cat breeds their whiskers are usually somewhat shorter. Furthermore they are curled, which is also provided for in the breed standard. There are no restrictions concerning the coat colour of the German Rex.
Character of the German Rex
The German Rex is characterized by a friendly and affectionate character. She prefers to spend a lot of time close to her human roommates and builds up a very close relationship with them.
The German Rex has a high stress tolerance and always behaves peacefully with other pets. At the same time, she is very curious and playful, which is why needs-based activities such as cat toys should not be missing in her everyday life.
Keeping and care of the German Rex
The German Rex is an excellent indoor cat. As long as it has enough connection to its family, it proves to be an undemanding roommate. Freedom of movement is not absolutely necessary for a happy German Rex. A secured balcony is however gladly accepted by her.
Since the coat of the German Rex has very little hair, taking care of its coat is easy. Occasional brushing is enough.
German Rex diseases
Inbreeding is quite common and because of that, the German Rex unfortunately suffers from a weakened immune system.
The German Rex can also suffer from various general cat diseases and can become infected with cat sniffles or develop kidney insufficiency, which is common in cats.
In order to avoid health problems or at least to detect them early, cat owners should plan regular visits to the vet and make sure the cat’s vaccinations are up to date.
The life expectancy of the German Rex
A healthy German Rex can easily reach an age of 12-15 years.
