Can fat in food cause allergies in dogs?
Our hypoallergenic dog food with insect protein from the larvae of the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens), and is ideal for dogs needing sensitive diets. Even dogs with very strong food allergies have no problems with our digestible insect-based varieties.
This is because, unlike conventional protein sources such as chicken or fish, this unusual protein source has practically no allergy potential. Why the poultry fat contained in the feed does not change this either, we will explain to you below.
Hypoallergenic dog food with poultry fat?
We support our customers not only with high-quality products in the appropriate nutrition of their dogs, but also always have an open ear for questions. One question that reached us a few days ago, for example, concerned the poultry fat contained in our hypoallergenic dog food.
The main concern was that the fat could cause problems due to an allergy to chicken meat. This concern is quite understandable. However, it is also completely unfounded.
Feed allergies are not caused by fats, but by proteins. Even if a dog normally cannot tolerate chicken meat, the consumption of poultry fat is therefore absolutely harmless.
Common allergies in dogs
In dogs, the so-called flea bite allergy and atopic dermatitis are particularly widespread. The flea bite allergy is caused by fleas or by certain protein compounds in the saliva of the parasites.
Atopic dermatitis, on the other hand, is an environmental allergy that can be caused by contact with very different substances, such as pollen or house dust mites.
Another allergy that has increasingly become a problem in dogs in recent years is feed allergy. Its possible triggers include beef, cereals, dairy products and soya in particular.
How you can counteract a feed allergy
If your dog suffers from a food allergy, this is usually caused by certain proteins in his food. The allergy is manifested by digestive problems such as flatulence and diarrhoea as well as problems with the skin and coat.
As the above symptoms can sometimes be caused by other health problems, a visit to the vet is advisable. The veterinarian can examine your dog to determine whether a disease rather than a food allergy may be responsible for the symptoms.
If this is not the case, the next step is to determine the responsible allergen. As a rule, this is done by means of an exclusion diet lasting several weeks. However, this proves to be time-consuming, which is why we recommend that you switch directly to our hypoallergenic insect-based dog food.
After the changeover, it usually does not take long before the problems caused by the food allergy disappear and your dog's well-being improves significantly.
Insect protein: a good choice not only for allergic dogs
Of course, our insect-based dog food is not only suitable for four-legged friends with food allergies, but also for the species-appropriate nutrition of all dogs. The insect protein contained in the food is highly digestible and provides your dog with all essential amino acids.
You can therefore be sure that your four-legged friend is optimally supplied with animal proteins even without meat in his feed and that there are no deficiency symptoms even with a permanent feeding of insect protein.
In our assortment you will find both wet and dry food as well as tasty insect-based dog snacks, so that an all-round digestible diet for your nutritionally sensitive dog is no problem.
