Ocicat: Cat Food and a Description of the Breed
The Ocicat is an exotic looking cat breed from the USA. It owes its name to the wild cat Ocelot, which lives in South and Central America, but is not related to it. Despite its wild appearance the Ocicat is very tame and affectionate, which makes it an excellent family cat.
History of the Ocicat
The Ocicat resembles a wildcat. However, unlike hybrid cats like the Savannah cat, the breed was created without the use of wildcats.
The Ocicat was developed in the 1960s and it’s a cross between the Abyssinian and the Siamese. Later they also crossed the breed with the American Shorthair.
In its home country the Ocicat soon became very popular among cat lovers. In 1987 it was first recognized in the USA as an independent cat breed. In 1992 it was finally recognized by the FiFé.
Appearance of the Ocicat
The medium to large Ocicat has an athletic build. Its strong legs are of medium length and its chest is deep. A male Ocicat weighs between five and seven kilos, while females weighing four to five kilos are usually much lighter.
The head of the Ocicat has a slight wedge shape. Their medium-sized ears should ideally have small tufts of hair at the tips. Their large eyes are almond shaped. They may have chamfered all colours. Only blue cat eyes are not desired in the Ocicat.
The coat of the Ocicat
The Ocicat has a short, shiny coat with a fine texture. The coat is close lying and smooth. The spotted tabby pattern, which contributes to the characteristic appearance of the Ocicat, is a special feature.
The coat may be in a variety of colours including chocolate, cinnamon, lavender, blue, tawny and fern with silver. However, white is only permitted on the face and throat and must not appear on the rest of the Ocicat's body.
Character of the Ocicat
Despite its wildcat-like appearance, the Ocicat has a very friendly character. They are gentle and people-oriented and develop a close relationship with their owner.
The Ocicat is an active cat who loves to play and run around. The Ocicat does not like to be left alone for longer periods of time.
Keeping and care of the Ocicat
The Ocicat is an uncomplicated and undemanding domestic cat. The cat will be happy as long as it receives enough attention and is offered enough activities.
Ideally the Ocicat should have at least a cat safe garden where it can run around and play.
The social Ocicat usually gets along well with other pets like dogs. Living together with children also works without problems, as long as the kids show a little consideration for their four-legged friend.
The short coat of the Ocicat is easy to care for. Occasional brushing is often enough. In this way not only loose hairs can be removed. The grooming ritual also helps to strengthen the relationship between the Ocicat and its owner.
Ocicat diseases
The Ocicat does not have an increased susceptibility to certain diseases. They tend to have a strong immune system.
The Ocicat can be infected by common cat diseases such as feline rhinitis or feline diabetes. Regular vet checks and vaccinations against diseases such as feline infectious diseases are recommended.
In addition, outdoor animals should be regularly checked for skin parasites such as ticks and cat fleas and any infestation should be counteracted immediately.
The life expectancy of the Ocicat
Provided that the keeping conditions are good and the cat is spared from serious diseases, the Ocicat can reach an age of about 17 years.
